Butterfly Beach in Santa Barbara is a long, clean, beautiful stretch of sand, perfect for a long leisurely stroll.
Although only this part is called "Butterfly Beach", the whole stretch continues for miles. It really is this blue. This is an unretouched photo taken on an early spring morning, just across from the Four Seasons Biltmore Santa Barbara resort. The azure sky meets the rich pale blue of the Pacific Ocean. It is lovely.

A local person told us that the beach was named after the beautifully colored Monarch butterfly that has many winter resting grounds along the California coast. One of those resting grounds is nearby.
There aren't as many Monarch butterflies as there used to be, but the beach has kept its name.
This is, in fact, the beach of choice for both the Santa Barbara Biltmore Resort and for the San Ysidro Ranch.
Should you be staying at the Biltmore Santa Barbara, a personal butler will bring your picnic basket, umbrella and towels to you at the beach, and retrieve them at the end of the day. Find the best deal, compare prices, and read what other travelers have to say about Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara
Guests at San Ysidro Ranch will be chauffeured down to the beach with their picnic baskets in tow.

Here is Ken by the stairway to the beach area.
The wide walkway in front of Ken extends all the way down the beach, a perfect route for bicyclists. In fact, the Biltmore has bicycles available for its guests.

Keep walking and you will come to the section in front of the Doubletree, another Santa Barbara resort hotel.
Mark and Diane, our guests from Houston, decided to go wiggle their toes in the sand in spite of its being a breezy day. On the right you see the last vestiges of a beach wedding, a not uncommon event on Santa Barbara beaches.
Then further north yet is the Santa Barbara wharf. It is a fisherman's wharf, so bring your rod and reel if the mood strikes you. Sitting on a pier, sharing a fishing pole can be a very romantic adventure.

What is a Santa Barbara beach vacation without a sunset? And they are sometimes so spectacular. I think people like you and me keep taking pictures of sunsets because we know that the perfect moment for an image is so very fleeting ... and so very romantic.
