Romantic Weekend Getaways:
La Jolla Beach

Actually, there is not just one La Jolla beach.  There are several.  The ones we will look at are near La Jolla Caves where kayaking and snorkeling are so popular.

We numbered from the right because that is the order the beaches will be in if you are driving down Prospect Street to Coast Boulevard.

	(1) LA JOLLA CAVES.  This is not a beach, but it is the first area you will see as you drive or walk down Coast Boulevard.  There are waves crashing below, with a lovely walking path, with kayaks in the distance.
	(2) LA JOLLA COVE.  The Cove area is a small area dominated by rocks.  There is a small beach.  Not great for swimming, but swimming is allowed.  But it is great for tide pool exploring.  Put your head together with your sweetie's and see what you can see.  Most of the La Jolla beach area around La Jolla Cove is very rocky.  It is spectacular to watch, and to explore.
	(3) ELLEN BROWNING SCRIPPS PARK runs along the edge of the cliff in between La Jolla Cove and Children's Beach.  There are picnic tables and barbeques and lots of benches, perfect for a romantic afternoon. If you should be visiting in summertime, ask about the Sunday afternoon concerts in the park.  They are free, and great fun. One day I was sitting on a bench, pondering great thoughts at the ocean's edge and watching the birds when the word went out.  All of a sudden the birds started forming huge "Vs" and heading off to the horizon.  Group after group flew over, hundreds and hundreds of them.  It was quite spectacular.
	(4) LA JOLLA SHELL BEACH.  At the southern edge of Scripps Park is a steep stairway leading down to this charming little beach.  It is especially pretty in springtime when coastal flowers are in bloom.  Way in the distance you can see Childrens Pool Beach.
(5) CHILDRENS POOL BEACH.  Here is where the many personalities of the Pacific Ocean converge.  Because the Pacific Ocean can be rough, Ellen Browning Scripps had a barrier built to create a perfect beach for children.  And it is.  Or was.  You see, it is also a perfect beach for seals.  These are large, two ton seals, and they don't mix well with children.  So now the Childrens Pool Beach is roped off to protect both the seals and the children.  And the La Jolla seals are fun to watch. However, there is a great walkway along the top of the barrier.  On a calm day it is a nice stroll.  And on a rough weather day, odds are that you will get a bit damp.

OTHER LA JOLLA BEACH AREAS

BELOW CHILDREN'S POOL BEACH is another stretch of alternating beach and tide pools.  It is a nice, uncrowded area for exploring and sunning.  Take a look at Windansea Beach if surfing is your game.

LA JOLLA SHORES.  About two miles north of the La Jolla Cove area is a very nice stretch of beach called La Jolla Shores.  Lots of beach and sunshine here.  A few restaurants too.  You can actually see this beach from the La Jolla Caves walkway.

BLACKS BEACH.  This is on the northern area of La Jolla.  Blacks Beach is for those preferring to go "au natural", and the beach is appropriately hard to find and hard to reach.

TORREY PINES AREA.  There are several beaches along Torrey Pines Road.  One is "dog beach" for walking your dog.  Others are nice for sunning and swimming.  Most of these have no facilities available.
