"La Jolla" means "the jewel", and indeed it is. Like a crown jewel along the southern California coast, it commands breathtaking vistas, and more. Taking a stroll down Prospect Street, the two very significant parts of La Jolla jump out: the amazing restaurants, and the amazing art.
There are several distinct sections in La Jolla, California. The village area sits on a cliff overlooking rocky caves and a quaint park. Torrey Pines area is also along the coast, but further north. It is home to the world reknown Torrey Pines Golf Course. These are the two areas that are most romantic in La Jolla.
There is another section that is well known, the UTC (University Town Center) area. There are a lot of excellent hotels there, but nothing much to do but eat and walk in a mall. It is great for business, but less so for a romantic weekend getaway. If you elect to stay in UTC, plan on driving anywhere you want to go.
So let's take a stroll along Prospect Street in La Jolla village.

All manner of art galleries line Prospect Street. Traditional master artists and contemporary artists and exceptional craftsmen all comingle comfortably here. "Downtown" La Jolla, California, is a fairly compact area, about four square blocks. It is small enough to walk easily, and large enough to hold hundreds and hundreds of treasures.
And, if you would like to see even more art, continue just a couple of blocks further south along Prospect Street to the Museum of Contemporary Art.
