There she is: The Pink Lady. Isn't she lovely!
La Valencia Hotel has been dubbed "The Pink Lady" by locals because of its soft pink exterior. This mural personifying The Pink Lady is hidden away in the garden above the swimming pool. Lilies and bougainvillea and begonia and green green lawns surround her.
Most people don't ever see this mural because it is hidden in a quiet corner of the hotel, in a garden.
In fact, that is what surprised us about La Valencia Hotel La Jolla: there are just so many spots to find a private moment, to enjoy a glass of wine, to savor the company of our companion, just like this garden.
"LV", as the locals call it, has been a favorite romantic weekend spot for decades. Find the best deal, compare prices, and read what other travelers have to say about La Valencia Hotel
Here are some of the other hidden romantic spots we discovered in La Valencia:
![]() This is the lobby area. Way in the back are five tables, each with a spectacular ocean view of La Jolla Cove. Dine here if you can. And enjoy the lobby anytime. |
![]() Few San Diego hotels can offer a suite as comfortable as this one. The snuggly sofa is perfect for a honeymoon or getaway weekend. La Jolla lodging at its finest. |
![]() BJ and Andrea are near the "back bar" area, a tiny, nearly private bar. At Christmas time, the huge tree here is truly spectacular. |
![]() On Sundays this patio area is full of brunches, but early evening finds just you and your sweetie, and the fireplace and the fountain. |

This is another famous mural at La Valencia. The image above is about half the mural. It represents the whaling industry that flourished off the coast of San Diego for many years.
When it was too politically incorrect to show whales being harpooned, the artist did a second mural and pasted it on top of this one.
The original mural has now been restored to its original brilliance.

While you must take a peek at the whaling mural, also walk around that wall and you will discover another surprising nook: The Whaling Bar Grill. It is a very comfortable spot for a lunch or dinner.
And those jaguars keeping guard by the fireplace add considerable atmosphere.

There is a great deal more to La Valencia Hotel La Jolla. Two days did not do it justice. For a hotel with such a small footprint, it holds lots and lots of surprises. Be sure to read about the Villas at La Valencia Hotel too!
We do thank Cathleen Flowers, our lovely hostess, for helping us discover some of the joys of the lovely Pink Lady.
