We just had the hungries for something fishy. So we headed for one of our favorite Newport Beach Restaurants: Gulfstream. This is where the fish is so fresh that it may not even be on the menu.
Gulfstream Restaurant in Newport Beach sits on the corner of MacArthur Boulevard and Coast Highway, but you enter through Corona del Mar Shopping Center, a charming shopping area of unique shops. There is lots of parking.

Walking up to the entryway, the first thing you see is the bevy of bright yellow umbrellas off to the right.
This is the outdoor patio area at Gulfstream, a coveted spot on a sunny day.
Next to the doorway is a list of specials for the day, perhaps two or three really special fish entrees, and maybe a third of something else. While all the fish at Gulfstream is superb, order from this menu if you can. You will find yourself trying new tasty treats that you didn't know existed.
Inside the door you will be greeted by ...

All of which says that the Gulfstream is a fish restaurant to reckon with, one with lovely hostesses, and a place that invites conversation and camaraderie at Happy Hour and other times. (Yes, that is a piano that you see way at the back of the bar. It comes to life in the evening, with soft music floating through the restaurant.)

So what are these "strange fish" I mentioned?
On the day we were there, a featured fish was "Arctic Char". I had never heard of such a fish, and am pretty certain I had never eaten it. Our waitress described it as a cross between trout and salmon. And it was really great. I think it leaned more to the salmon than the trout in taste, but it did have a unique flavor all its own.
Gulfstream is a very pleasant restaurant to visit. Its wide open spaces and walls of windows are complimented with fishy artwork -- sculptures and paintings -- as well as artistically designed floral accents. Everyone is always nice. The servers are all very knowledgeable. And the chefs are just super. Here's what others say about Gulfstream.
