Romantic Picnic Ideas:
The Perfect Picnic Menu

Choose your picnic basket for 2 and put in ... what?  Here are several choices for the perfect picnic menu throughout the day.  And peek at the free recipes on the bottom of the pages!

A Sunrise Perfect Picnic Menu

Oh, so romantic.  Begin the day with a lovely picnic basket filled with breakfast goodies, like ...

Fresh fruit -- oranges, apples, grapes, chunks of pineapple on skewers
Breakfast breads -- Banana bread, loaf of fresh sourdough bread, bakery style rolls.  Include special butter or jams.
Beverages -- Champagne for breakfast is so special.  Coffee and/or tea in a hot thermos.
Eggs -- Hard boiled or deviled eggs travel well.  Keep away from the fried and scrambled varieties.

Before you know it, you have set a very romantic mood for a very romantic day!

A Lunch Time Perfect Picnic Menu

There are so many options here that it is hard to know where to start.  So let's look at types of food that make for a perfect picnic menu.

Nibble Dishes.  Cheese and crackers, or fresh fruit, or chips with guacamole.  This is just something to nibble on before the main meal.
Main Dish.  Choose something like a salad, or baked chicken, or hero sandwiches.
Side Dishes.  Choose something in different colors and textures from your main dish.  If, for example, your main dish is baked chicken, brighten up the plate with a cranberry-orange salad, or maybe a green salad with bright red tomatoes and black olives.  Bring two or even three different side dishes.
Dessert.  All kinds of cookies and cakes are great.  If the main dish is "heavy", then choose a light dessert, and vice versa.  Avoid ice cream and jellos - they just melt too easily.  Some whipped creams can be transported for a nice flourish to end the meal.
Beverages.  Wine is always a top choice.  Perhaps a thermos of coffee or tea.  Maybe a spritzer, especially on a hot day.

 A Starlight Perfect Picnic Menu

This could be a more gourmet version of the lunch picnic menu, or it could be a light snack as you watch the stars come out at the beach.  Both are very romantic.  Let's look at the starlight picnic:

Beverages.  Champagne or wine.  This is the centerpiece of our starlight picnic.  Do use glass goblets, not paper.  This is, after all, very romantic and very special.  You may also want a thermos of coffee or hot cocoa, especially if it is chilly.
Munchies.  Something light, but special.  This could be your dessert after dinner.  Try a chocolate cake with raspberry sauce dripped over it.  Or lemon squares with powdered sugar sprinkled on top.  For something lighter, cheese and crackers, perhaps with fresh fruit, is always a great choice.

It doesn't matter where or when you have your picnic.  The perfect picnic menu will be the one you choose just for you and your sweetie.

Picnics have been a wonderful part of romantic California getaways since ... well since there were California getaways.  Your hotel will help you get one together and point you to a very romantic picnic spot, such as Seaport Village Park or Butterfly Beach or Heisler Park or Avila Beach or Idyllwild.

Here's a Hero Sandwich. a perfect picnic menu item:

A Versatile Italian Hero Sandwich

Add or eliminate ingredients to suit your taste. This is great if you don't know quite what your sweetie would like, or if your tastes are a bit different.

You will need for the sauce

  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried mustard
  • Salt and pepper

You will need for the "innerds":

  • 1/2 cup seeded and chopped pepperoncini
  • 1/2 cup seeded and chopped cherry peppers
  • 4-6 leaves of shredded lettuce -- iceberg or redleaf are good choices
  • 2 thinly sliced tomates
  • 5 oz. thinly sliced salami
  • 5 oz. thinly sliced cappicola
  • 5 oz. thinly sliced salami cotto
  • 5 oz. thinly sliced mortadella cheese
  • 5 oz. thinly sliced provolone cheese

AND one loaf of fresh French bread, about 24" long.  Cut it lengthwise.

You may either make the sandwich loaf ahead of time, or take the ingredients in separate little containers and create your sandwiches at the picnic.  Wrap the bread in plastic wrap, whether or not the innerds are in it -- this will help keep it fresh.

For the sauce, combine all ingredients well.  Chill for at least an hour before using.  When you make the sandwiches, drizzle the sauce over the meats.  Don't drench the meats, just lightly drizzle.

Be sure to pack a sharp knife so you can cut the loaf into sections for each of you.  You can create your own sandwiches, or create one big hero sandwich and cut it in half.
