Whale watching is such great fun. "Whales" and "romance" don't usually go together, but this is a really fun adventure that will bring you cheek to cheek with your sweetie. It is definitely one of the many romantic things to do in Santa Barbara.
If your Santa Barbara holiday falls in the winter or spring time, or even in the summer, do take a whale watching tour. There are no other creatures on earth like these gentle giants. Gray, Humpback, Blue, and Minke whales are all part of the oceanic parade along the Santa Barbara Channel. Once in a while, even Killer whales might swim through.
Go to the Santa Barbara harbor to get on your tour boat. The captain will know which whales are passing, and where to find them. A typical tour last from two hours to half a day. It can get chilly on the ocean, so bring a warm jacket or blanket wrap.
Watch for whales, yes, but also watch for harbor seals, sea lions, and an abundance of marine bird life. Bring binoculars and your camera. And snuggle up while you are sharing this special journey.
February through May. Thousands of Grey whales make an annual migration through the Santa Barbara Channel from February through May. March and April are the best time to see Grey whales, and they are sometimes so abundant that they can be spotted from shore with binoculars.
June through August. Now is the prime time for Humpback, Blue, and Minke whales. Typically, June, July and August represent the best time to see these species.
Blue whales are the largest creatures on earth, and seeing them up close as they pass the California coast is an experience of a lifetime.
Humpback whales are among the friendliest species of whale, sometimes swimming right up to tour boats.
Sadly, whale populations continue to diminish, so take advantage of the chance to see these amazing mammals while you can.
